Escape Pods

There are those who are sitting in the life boat/escape pods of what they believe is a sinking ship. Waiting for the captain to push the button to send the boats/pods into the sea. They think that this is the way to escape from the destruction of the ship and are ready and waiting for the bell.

But this is not the Lord's way. His way is to stay with the sinking ship and help as many other people off before it finally goes below the waters. The Captain is the last to leave, not the first and the officers remain until the end. So who are the people sitting in the lifeboats/ escape pods? Those who are afraid of the destruction, chaos and mayhem in a sinking ship.

To be actively taking part in a rescue mission is to be involved and taking risks, getting dirty and having a "hand-on" attitude. It also indicates a compassionate involvement in the lives and outcome of the fellowship mates. A desire to help to be a part of the rescue not an onlooker.

I believe Jesus was that type of person. A compassionate helper who was prepared and did "get his hands dirty" involved with the sinners and the unacceptable - preaching and teaching his truths to them. And They loved Him. Most of His close followers were from the lower levels of society - not the upper levels.

And the very people who should have received Him the most - the educated and religiously aware - were the ones who actually hated Him the most. What on the face of it should have happened was in fact the opposite. Far from receiving Him as Messiah they sought to shut him up and off and kill Him.

Jesus was filled with compassion and love for the ordinary people. He saw them as sheep without a shepherd and His heart went out to them.  He reserved His harshest and most condemning comments for the religious leaders - who in turn hated Him.

In one sense the religious leaders were like a group sitting in an escape pod - they didn't see themselves as part of the "masses" - the ordinary people. They were above and apart from all that (in their estimation). And Jesus was not impressed. He identified their sin as pride - "you are of your father the devil". Anyone who looks down on others, in their hearts, and sees themselves as separate - sitting on a "holy escape pod" has a problem with pride.

To imagine that somehow you will be taken out of the chaos to come - to escape the wrath of God, that you are sitting pretty and will pop off the planet as things get "hotted up", is a questionable mindset.

I suggest it comes from an attitude of pride that "the rest of you minions are going to suffer but we will be saved/safe" My feeling is that this is not a Christ-like, Jesus type mindset. The fire/sinking ship/chaos wouldn't actually have impacted on Him. And those who refused His help or cursed Him He would be saying " forgive them Father they know not what they do". That is the true escape pod - to show love and grace in the face of death and destruction. That takes a submitted spirit to God.

Persecution of believers is coming, in fact is here already. Blessed are you Jesus said. David ran at Goliath, he didn't run away. Rather than sitting in an escape pod, we need to be actively involved in the rescue of the trapped souls.

John 8:44-45 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Matt 9:36 When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Matt 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and celebrate, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.
